Scene 1: Mumble’s house

It wasn’t  panic or chaos exactly, more a sort of controlled disaster area, an every-imaginable-surface-smothered type of disaster area, with detritus covering every square centimetre of space; chocolate, icing sugar, cereal flakes and breadcrumbs, multi flavoured Snapperipples and bottles of Weazel  juice.

Mumble (Jemima to her class mates at Dribblepit Prep School), was turning 11 this sunny Saturday and Sandy (Mumble’s Mum) had invited 15 of Mumble’s ‘friends’ from school as well the new boy who had just moved in to the house across the street. We say ‘friends’ in that rather ‘duh’ sort of voice as Mumble was not very popular. It wasn’t because she was nasty, ugly, mean or beastly to anyone. It was more that she was different. She always knew what other people were thinking, which of course is very disconcerting if you think you are having a private thought.
