Therapy and Counseling

Therapy and Counseling is Not Mumble and Jumble!

In today’s enlightened age, therapy and counseling should not be stigmatized. However, that is exactly the way it is in our modern culture. Although many people seek help from counselors or therapists in times of need, there is a stigma attached to it. There are diagnoses to be made and prescriptions to fill. This is not the way therapy should be.

Insurance companies are one engine that drives the problem. They will only reimburse for certain services and only for a few sessions. This process makes for bad therapy. The therapists have to rush things and see more patients. The quality of care goes down.

Another reason that therapy is still “behind the curtain” is a general sense that we shouldn’t need it. We are strong individuals who can get through anything, and we certainly don’t need any help. This type of attitude permeates modern culture, and it is detrimental to our health and wellbeing.

Also, the proliferation of self help books on every subject imaginable, from “Lose 5 Pounds in a Day” to Premature Ejaculation Books seem to create a sense that we can solve our problems on our own.

So how do we change things?

Bring Therapy & Counseling into the 21st century!!

It’s good to talk about your feelings. It is helpful, and allows you to process what is really going on. It allows you to deal with your anger and your negative feelings in a way that is productive, rather than potentially harmful to those around you. Now we just need to bring it out of the closet.

More and more tv shows show people going to therapy. Maybe that’s a start. Of course going to psychoanalysis is in vogue amongst those with lots of money, but generally speaking we still don’t accept therapy as a necessarily way to bring balance and happiness to our lives.

No matter what the problem – anxiety, depression, chronic worry, problems in relationships, a desire to stop panc attacks – all of these can be addressed by a skilled therapist. There are a lot out there, it just takes finding the right one that fits you.

Often one can find a qualified therapist in their area by googling “therapist your city”. Be sure to check out the website and call the therapist, they may offer a free session so you can see if it is the right fit before signing up.
